The Mitsubishi Pencil Company acquires LAMY, aiming to lead the company and brand into the future

Mitsubishi Pencil Co Ltd, the company behind the well-known uni brand, has acquired C. Josef Lamy GmbH and the LAMY brand. The family-owned company LAMY, founded in 1930 by C. Josef Lamy, underwent a thorough search for a buyer who could bring expertise, experience, and a commitment to Germany as a business location. Today, Mitsubishi Pencil successfully completed the acquisition, with the annual turnover of Mitsubishi Pencil several times that of Lamy.

Emphasis on the globalization and growth of digital writing

The decision to sell was driven by the goal of finding a strong partner to advance the expansion of digital writing and increase international sales. Mitsubishi Pencil is well-equipped to achieve this, while also committing to preserving the headquarters and production facilities in Heidelberg, and making investments in the company’s future development and brand. According to Shigehiko Suhara, the sixth-generation President and CEO of Mitsubishi Pencil Co Ltd:

„We have the greatest respect for the history and strength of the LAMY brand. We believe that the vision and corporate culture of Lamy and Mitsubishi Pencil harmonise perfectly. We are also confident that the acquisition of the company Lamy will provide a strong combined platform for future growth and increased shareholder value for both LAMY and Mitsubishi Pencil.” Vera Lamy, former co-partner of C. Josef Lamy GmbH, explains, „It was very important to us to find a company with the strength and heart to work with Lamy employees and open up a whole new chapter for Lamy together with all our partners. We have found this company.” Her brother and co-partner Markus Lamy adds, „The core of the LAMY brand will be retained and further developed. 'Made in Germany’ will continue to play a key role in this. That was and is of the utmost importance to us.”

Mitsubishi Pencil has a rich tradition spanning 137 years, and continues to combine this heritage with innovative strength. With over 2,700 employees and 22 international sales offices, the company operates 11 production facilities worldwide. Specializing in high-quality writing instruments, Mitsubishi Pencil offers a diverse range of products, from basic pencils to advanced ballpoint pens, marker pens, and mechanical pencils.

Among its popular products, Mitsubishi Pencil is known for the uni-ball rollerball pens, featuring innovative waterproof pigment ink. The uni brand also includes Posca water-based ink markers, suitable for use on various surfaces, and the groundbreaking Kuru Toga mechanical pencils, equipped with automatic lead rotation mechanism.

Mitsubishi Pencil and Lamy have a history of collaboration and mutual respect. Mitsubishi Pencil brings not only its innovative products and strong international sales, but also its expertise in e-commerce, which will benefit Lamy. The LAMY brand products will complement Mitsubishi Pencil’s premium range of products. Mitsubishi Pencil is also committed to advancing the technological development of LAMY, particularly in the areas of digital writing and production innovation.

Steffen Rübke, CEO of C. Josef Lamy GmbH, is excited about the collaboration, stating that it will strengthen both companies and drive technological advancement in the industry.

„We are certain that the Mitsubishi Pencil Company will strengthen the company and the LAMY brand with its focus on innovation, its large distribution network and its strong e-commerce expertise as exemplified by the success of the business with Amazon in the US market.”
