Groundbreaking Plastic Waste Management Project Launching in Saudi Arabia

MVW Lechtenberg Projektentwicklungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft GmbH, a top consulting firm in the field of alternative fuels for the cement and related industries, is teaming up with Empower, a leading provider of innovative traceability solutions, to introduce an innovative plastic waste management project in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In order to expand the capabilities and scope of the project, MVW Lechtenberg & Partner Middle East and SIRC have established a joint venture. SIRC, the executive arm for waste management from the Government of Saudi Arabia and a major participant in the initiative, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in the Kingdom.

Our project aims to convert around 3 million tonnes of municipal solid waste into refuse-derived fuels (RDF) annually in six governorates. Once fully operational, it is estimated that the project will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1,791,300 tonnes per year.

Blockchain technology from Empower will be an essential part of this project, guaranteeing clear oversight of plastic waste from collection to recycling and RDF conversion. This will enable immediate monitoring of waste management activities, offering important data for stakeholders such as municipalities, governments, and environmental organizations.

This project introduces a new approach by combining Plastic Credits and RDF systems. Plastic Credits are designed to encourage proper disposal of plastic waste by offering financial incentives for documented collection and recycling efforts. These credits can be exchanged or sold to organizations looking to offset their plastic impact or meet environmental requirements, promoting a more sustainable economy.

Plastic Credits aim to bridge the financial divide between the expenses of gathering and managing plastic waste and the market value of recyclable materials and RDF. By establishing a reliable source of income, these credits will secure the ongoing financial sustainability of this waste management project, increasing its appeal to investors and stakeholders.

We will verify these credits according to the GPx traceability standard developed by GPN Corporation, a member of the International Green Purchasing Network (IGPN). This standard guarantees transparency, traceability, and accountability, essential for gaining trust and securing involvement from different stakeholders.
