Europe needs Twisters campaign

A collaboration of severe weather researchers from 14 European countries is in the works to conduct high-density measurements of severe storms, inspired by the film Twisters. Their goal is to improve warning systems for severe thunderstorms in the future.

The researchers are currently planning the largest European measurement campaign on severe thunderstorms to date, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of these extreme weather events.

“We want to use the latest technologies, such as weather drones. To do this, it is extremely important that mobile measurement teams get very close to the storms,” says Alois Holzer, initiator of the European “TIM” measurement campaign to start in 2026.

The new movie Twisters showcases European research teams using the latest weather sensors to study storms. Unlike the scenes in the movie, the research campaign prioritizes safety and responsible behavior towards the environment and local communities, as emphasized by Holzer.

“We hope that the kind of support from major donors possible in North America can also be achieved in Europe. We are also in dialogue with various public authorities.”

The project is currently seeking major donors to support the individual mobile measurement teams, as stated by Alois Holzer.
