According to a recent study by IPSOS, over 55% of Azerbaijani respondents view energy transition as a top priority, aligning with European countries. Additionally, 64% of Azerbaijani respondents and 53% in Kazakhstan prioritize energy transition to combat climate change, surpassing several major countries. Furthermore, over 80% of those interviewed in both Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan consider energy transition training and professional development to be crucial, exceeding the importance placed on these issues in other countries. The study, which includes over 2,000 interviews conducted in 12 countries across 4 continents, sheds light on the global perspective on energy transition.
The importance of the energy transition and its potential benefits to the environment, economy, and society is becoming increasingly recognized, even in countries with fossil-based economies such as Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. A study conducted by the Fondazione MAIRE – ETS, in collaboration with renowned international market research company IPSOS, revealed this trend. Titled „Climate goals: winning the challenge of climate goals through the creation of skills and competences worldwide. Addendum 1: focus Azerbaijan – Kazakhstan”, the study was unveiled during COP29 in Baku.
In the 2024 edition, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have been included, expanding the total panel to 12 countries (Italy, UK, US, Turkey, KSA, UAE, Algeria, Chile, China, India, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan). The study conducted 2,000 interviews with a highly educated sample of the population, as well as opinion leaders.
The study, sponsored by MAIRE’s subsidiaries NEXTCHEM and TECNIMONT, reveals a growing global awareness of the need for new skills to drive business and job opportunities in the energy transition. Despite short-term challenges and costs, respondents believe in the long-term value and positive impact of the transition. Countries facing the greatest challenge in transitioning to a sustainable economy based on renewable and circular solutions will require significant investments in training and skill building in the coming years.
A recent survey showed that 55% of people in Azerbaijan prioritize the energy transition, while only 39% of respondents in Kazakhstan feel the same way. This indicates a growing awareness of environmental issues and the potential economic benefits of transitioning to clean energy, providing a promising foundation for future energy initiatives in the region.
There is a clear need for a significant increase in skills and training for the workforce in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan as they transition to renewable energy. Many people in these regions recognize the need for additional training in energy transition-related topics, especially in areas where traditional energy sector jobs are at risk, providing an opportunity for economic diversification.
Skills needed for the energy sector range from technical expertise to soft skills. In Kazakhstan, the focus is on analyzing and assessing the environmental impact of its vast natural resources and existing energy infrastructure. In Azerbaijan, there is a growing emphasis on diversifying the energy sector and developing expertise in solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources for a more sustainable energy mix.
Both Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan prioritize the development of essential skills for addressing challenges and making informed decisions. Problem-solving abilities are emphasized in Azerbaijan, while critical thinking skills are valued in Kazakhstan for analyzing complex data and evaluating alternative approaches.
By prioritizing the development of their workforce and investing in education and training, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan can play a crucial role in achieving global climate goals and gain a competitive edge in the growing green economy.
Chairman Fabrizio Di Amato of Fondazione MAIRE and MAIRE Group expressed his optimism about the energy transition, citing the study’s findings on Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. He emphasized the potential for gradual adoption of technological solutions, including decarbonized gas, in every country. Di Amato also highlighted the Foundation’s commitment to facilitating the implementation of public policies and training programs to support the necessary skills for this paradigm shift.
KEY FINDINGS FROM THE 2024 STUDY
According to the 2024 study, 96% of respondents in Azerbaijan and 93% in Kazakhstan have heard of the energy transition. In Azerbaijan, 43% of respondents are „very familiar” with it, while in Kazakhstan, only 29% are. Additionally, 39% of respondents in Kazakhstan and 55% in Azerbaijan consider the energy transition a priority. In terms of combating climate change, 64% of respondents in Azerbaijan and 53% in Kazakhstan believe the energy transition is crucial. However, in the short term, 57% of respondents in Kazakhstan and 31% in Azerbaijan believe that costs will outweigh benefits. Furthermore, more than 80% of respondents in both countries believe that training and upskilling are crucial, and 62% of respondents in Azerbaijan and 58% in Kazakhstan believe that problem solving skills need improvement. In Kazakhstan, critical thinking is seen as the most-required soft skill (68%), and 82% of respondents believe that the presence of skilled professionals for the energy transition should be improved.
Fondazione MAIRE – ETS is the corporate foundation of MAIRE Group. Its mission is to train future „humanist engineers” who can contribute to the energy transition. The foundation also works on projects to combat educational poverty and provide equal access to educational opportunities, especially in marginalized communities. Additionally, Fondazione MAIRE – ETS manages the historical archives of the MAIRE Group, preserving and promoting awareness of Italian engineering and architecture projects.
