EU4Regions – How EU cohesion policy solves local challenges and strengthens cross-border cooperation

The European Union is launching a new project called 'EU4Regions’ to promote its cohesion policy, which seeks to enhance economic, social, and territorial unity throughout the continent. This initiative will produce multimedia and journalistic content that demonstrates the policy’s impact on regions and people, with a focus on showcasing the EU’s contributions to addressing local challenges in Germany, its neighboring countries, and beyond.

’EU4Regions’ presents a variety of local projects from different countries, highlighting innovative solutions and cross-border cooperation initiatives funded by the EU cohesion policy. Throughout the year, the program features outstanding examples of successful projects, demonstrating the positive impact of regional collaboration.

Regio-Plants: cultivating sustainable food through research

The ‘Regio-Plants’ project, funded by Interreg, focuses on regional food research, especially on plant-based raw materials. The project aims to create innovative cultivation and storage methods to support the production of healthy and wholesome foods.

This project is able to thrive thanks to the collaboration between Bavaria and Upper Austria, leveraging cross-border cooperation. Key partners, such as the Technical University of Munich, the Austrian Drug Screening Institute, and the Food Competence Centre FFoQSI, bring their expertise to advance the research.

APRIORA: Innovative wastewater treatment for clean water

The APRIORA project, funded by the EU, is focused on addressing the issue of pharmaceutical residues in drinking water. Researchers at the University of Rostock in northern Germany are conducting analyses of water bodies to detect drug residues.

Utilizing measurements and modeling, a comprehensive risk assessment is conducted to consider both ecological and health impacts. This project facilitates the implementation of specific measures by authorities to enhance wastewater treatment. Additionally, 'APRIORA’ fosters collaboration between scientific institutions and authorities in the Baltic Sea region.

Enhancing Success through Cross-Border Collaboration

These projects demonstrate the significance of working together across borders and disciplines to address global issues. 'EU4Regions’ highlights how the EU’s cohesion policy fosters collaboration among regions and individuals to implement long-term, sustainable solutions, ultimately fostering unity across the bloc. Each project will be accompanied by a video, text, and photos.
