According to the Link11 European Cyber Report 2023, there has been a significant 70% rise in DDoS attacks, with attacks now reaching critical levels in just 14 seconds on average, down from 55 seconds in 2022. Furthermore, two thirds of the observed traffic is machine-generated, suggesting a high prevalence of bot activity.
The report highlights the increasing complexity of cybersecurity threats and the importance of using AI-based and automated security solutions to strengthen cyber resilience. Politically motivated attacks have played a significant role in this increase, targeting prominent entities such as the German federal states, the European Investment Bank, and Microsoft on a global scale.

These attacks have been driven by ongoing conflicts, such as those between Russia and Ukraine, and in Israel, resulting in politically motivated DDoS attacks carried out by organized groups.
The report highlights the increased security threat from web applications and APIs, particularly due to critical vulnerabilities in unpatched software. The EU’s requirement for Apple to allow third-party providers access to its interfaces further emphasizes the need for improved security measures in this area. Additionally, the growing risk from AI-driven bots presents significant challenges, with projections showing a 131% increase in online bot fraud by 2027.
