Dubai, one of the most important emirates in the United Arab Emirates alongside Abu Dhabi, is preparing for the post-oil era by aiming to transition from an oil state to an AI powerhouse. The UAE plans to generate 40 percent of its GDP through artificial intelligence by 2031, and has invested billions, appointed the world’s first Minister of State for AI, attracted scientists to the Gulf, and provided extensive support for start-ups to achieve this goal.

Understanding the ins and outs of AI models is essential for optimizing generative AI. This skill is projected to be highly valuable in the future job market, as it allows individuals to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence.

Introducing 'One Million AI Prompters’, a pioneering program focused on developing skills and knowledge in AI prompt engineering. This innovative initiative involves creating clear and impactful instructions for AI systems to accomplish a wide range of tasks, from generating original content to solving intricate problems.

„We aim to demonstrate to people the wide range of applications available. Whether you have a technical background or not, these tools are accessible to everyone,” stated Omar Al Olama, the UAE´s Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications. He emphasized the significance of cultivating practical engineering skills, which are essential for the future workforce and for improving quality of life through AI. Al Olama made history by becoming the world’s first AI Minister of State in the UAE in 2017.”

The inaugural Global Prompt Engineering Championship recently took place in Dubai, marking the launch of the 'One Million AI Prompters’ initiative. Contestants showcased the versatility of AI tools by competing in categories ranging from literature to art, going beyond traditional coding. Within the realm of AI, a prompt is a specific request made to a language model, such as ChatGPT, to generate an answer or solution for the user.

The Global Prompt Engineering Championship attracted entries from numerous countries, resulting in thirty finalists from 13 different countries being selected to compete in Dubai. Australian Megan Fowkes won in the art category, Indian Ajay Cyril, 33, took the coding category, and Aditya Nair, 34, claimed the literature category. The Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DCAI) awarded a total of one million dirhams, equivalent to approximately 273,000 US dollars, in prize money to the three winners.

The United Arab Emirates is becoming a key player in global tech competition, attracting the attention of major companies like Microsoft, Google, and IBM. These companies have already participated in workshops and collaborations in the UAE. Other countries and companies are also showing interest in AI partnerships. The UAE established an AI university in 2019 and the sovereign wealth fund Mubadala has created a $100 billion AI fund.

Microsoft has recently made a $1.5 billion investment in G42, the top artificial intelligence technology holding company in the UAE. This investment reflects Microsoft’s recognition of the UAE’s significant role in AI development. The strategic investment aims to strengthen the UAE’s position as a global AI hub and create more opportunities for partners and customers to innovate and expand.
