HEIDELBERG develops the AI-controlled print shop of tomorrow

With 20 years of expertise in digitalization and 5 years of AI experience, HEIDELBERG has been at the forefront of networking machines and systems in print shops since 2004. The HEIDELBERG Cloud currently connects 13,000 units worldwide, with a three-digit million euro investment in digital processes, products, and services.

Contrary to popular belief, the printing industry has become increasingly digital in recent years. HEIDELBERG now features digitally networked and software-controlled printing presses, over-the-air updates, intelligent assistance systems, and fully automated printing on Speedmaster models as standard offerings. With around 13,000 machines and systems connected to the company’s cloud, print shops benefit from machine data evaluation, benchmarking, performance improvements, and active machine monitoring. According to Dr. David Schmedding, Chief Technology and Sales Officer at HEIDELBERG, the company is now focusing on developing the AI-controlled print shop of the future, which will be capable of running shifts autonomously at a relatively low cost. HEIDELBERG aims to provide the necessary software, machines, and robotics to make this vision a reality.

HEIDELBERG has been a pioneer in mechanical engineering and industry since 2004, investing hundreds of millions in digitalization, data technology, and robotics. The company has shaped the printing industry over the past 20 years and beyond and will continue to do so in the future based on its technological expertise. For example, the AI-based consulting tool „PAT” has been providing contract printers with easy-to-implement recommendations for more efficient workflows since 2021. The next version of the well-known workflow software, Prinect Touch Free, is already in the works. This new AI-based version will be a cloud application that can independently decide the most efficient and cost-effective production method (offset or digital) and calculate all possible layouts on the print sheet. With these technical prerequisites, the AI-controlled printshop of tomorrow is the next achievable step.

HEIDELBERG is a total solution provider for all modern printing processes, offering a range of machines from toner to inkjet, offset printing to flexographic printing since the drupa 2024 trade fair. The Prinect workflow software connects all machines and controls the entire print production process, ensuring efficiency and quality. With a high order backlog following the drupa printing press trade fair, HEIDELBERG is well-equipped for the future and also offers digital services and output-based subscription models based on the number of sheets printed.
