FEV and ProLogium develop high-performance vehicle battery

Aachen – The demands of customers for the advancement of electric vehicles are well-established: lighter weight with improved efficiency, longer range with faster charging times, and top-notch safety. FEV, a leading innovator in Germany’s automotive and energy sector, and ProLogium, a global trailblazer in advanced vehicle batteries, have met these demands with their latest product.

The LLCB technology (Large-Footprint Lithium Ceramic Battery) makes all of this possible. Its anode, made of 100% silicon, offers a capacity density 10 times higher than the graphite anodes currently in use. Depending on the vehicle segment and intended use, the LLCB can save up to 300 kg or provide a maximum range of 1,000 km. The solid-state electrolyte used is non-flammable, increasing safety against thermal runaway and preventing potential short circuits caused by leaking electrolyte fluid in the event of a spill.

“For the LLCB solution, we have successfully combined ProLogium´s know-how in the field of cell development with our development, system and testing expertise,” said Dr. Thomas Hülshorst, Global Vice President Electric Powertrain at FEV. “Our collaboration on battery packs and concept designs focuses not only on regulatory standards, but also on market requirements. We even exceed these.”

The anode allows for incredibly fast charging, bringing the battery from 5 to 60 percent in just five minutes, providing an average range of 300 km. After an additional three minutes, the battery is charged to 80 percent, allowing for an extra 100 km of coverage. This technology helps to bring electric vehicle charging times closer to the duration of refueling for vehicles with combustion engines.
