175 years of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen: Company starts anniversary year with growth strategy

Our growth strategy is focused on achieving a medium-term sales potential of over €300 million. The key drivers of growth in our core business include packaging, digital printing, software, and lifecycle business. In addition, we are concentrating on further expanding our industrial business. With a legacy of 175 years, our company has been a driving force in the printing industry, known for technological innovations, quality, and reliability. We are excited to celebrate this milestone with numerous anniversary activities throughout the year.

In 2025, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (HEIDELBERG) is celebrating its 175th anniversary with a growth strategy. The company’s journey began in Frankenthal, Germany, as a bell foundry over 150 years ago. Since then, it has evolved into a global technology company and a leading provider of total solutions for print shops and packaging applications.

„To expand our market position, we are increasingly tapping into growth potential in our core business in packaging and digital printing as well as in the software and lifecycle business,” says Jürgen Otto, CEO of HEIDELBERG. „We will also continue to expand our offering in the growing green technologies market. This includes key areas such as high-precision mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, charging infrastructure and software, and new hydrogen technologies.” In total, HEIDELBERG sees growth poten-tial of more than € 300 million in sales for all strategic initiatives by the 2028/2029 financial year, while at the same time consolidating performance and increasing efficiency.

HEIDELBERG has a clear growth strategy to address future challenges, particularly in the packaging market.

• Significant growth in packaging market since 2014

HEIDELBERG is capitalizing on the growing global demand for packaging, which has increased by over 60 percent in the past decade. Through a partnership with Solenis, the company is adapting to the shift towards paper-based packaging and developing solutions for recyclable packaging, especially for the food industry. With over 50 percent of its turnover coming from the packaging segment, HEIDELBERG is well-positioned for continued growth in this area.

HEIDELBERG is capitalizing on the expansion of industrial digital printing, with the global market expected to grow from EUR 5 billion to EUR 7.5 billion by 2029. Through partnerships, such as the one with Canon, HEIDELBERG is broadening its digital printing solutions, leading to an anticipated increase in sales in the coming financial year.

As market estimates suggest, HEIDELBERG’s global digital printing market, inclusive of service and consumables, is projected to reach EUR 7.5 billion by 2029, up from EUR 5 billion currently. With a focus on expanding its digital printing solutions, including through collaboration with Canon, HEIDELBERG anticipates a rise in sales starting from the next financial year, as evidenced by incoming orders.

HEIDELBERG is focused on expanding its international business in over 170 countries, aiming for increased sales growth. With one of the largest global sales and service networks, the company is well-positioned to capitalize on growth markets in Asia, the USA, and emerging markets. HEIDELBERG’s strong presence in China, including local production and partnership with MK Masterwork, provides a solid foundation for this international expansion, as over 85 percent of its business is already conducted outside Germany.

Our primary focus is on expanding HEIDELBERG’s industrial business within the Technology segment. This includes exploring new product areas, markets, and industries. We have the necessary skills, expertise, and resources to expand beyond the printing industry, particularly in high-precision mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, electromobility, and hydrogen. Additionally, we are leveraging our expertise and capacities to help other companies efficiently industrialize or manufacture their products.

For 175 years, HEIDELBERG has been a leader in the printing industry, continuously innovating and delivering top quality and maximum reliability. The company has set new standards with groundbreaking developments such as the „Original Heidelberger Tiegel” and the „Speedmaster” model series for sheetfed offset printing. Jürgen Otto remarks, „175 years of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen demonstrate our consistency, innovative strength, and future viability. With our current market position, the expertise of our employees, and global customer relationships, we are poised for further growth in the coming years.”

HEIDELBERG is celebrating its anniversary year with a variety of events and activities, involving customers, employees, and partners. One highlight will be a week of celebrations at the Wiesloch-Walldorf headquarters in the newly designed demonstration center – the Home of Print. The week will feature an anniversary ceremony with guests from all over the world, including customers, suppliers, partners, and representatives from politics and society. Family days are also planned for employees at individual locations, along with the release of an anniversary magazine showcasing the company’s history and future direction.

HEIDELBERG has around 9,500 employees worldwide, with production facilities in several countries including China and the USA, as well as the densest sales and service network in the industry. This has established the company as a global player and world market leader from Germany. According to Otto, „Our history demonstrates how entrepreneurship, technical expertise, and the creative power of our employees have had a lasting impact on the company and the entire industry to this day.” – Picture is available at AP –
