On August 20, 2024, Yanfeng introduced its Electric Vehicle Interior (EVI) concept in Europe, aiming to create a vehicle interior that prioritizes a sense of freedom and space for passengers. The innovative Smart Cabin seat module replaces the traditional instrument panel and integrates key functions, such as intelligent surfaces for vehicle operation, an active headrest with audio features, advanced safety systems, seat-integrated climate control, and practical storage and charging options.
„Comprehensive studies carried out by our Yanfeng research team have shown that users want more technology but most importantly, technology that is intuitive to use in order to create a fun and enjoyable experience. They also want space that is significantly different from that in vehicles with combustion engines,” said Patrik Nebout, Chief Technology Officer at Yanfeng, commenting on the development of the concept.
The EVI concept is designed to meet the evolving needs of electric vehicle users and open up new possibilities for interior design in the future.
Smart Cabin seat module for different driving modes
The Smart Cabin seat module is a key feature of the EVI concept, integrating front seats with a floor console, steer-by-wire input system, HMI, displays, seatbelts, airbags, and HVAC microclimate system. The steer-by-wire system includes an integrated display that can be stowed for autonomous driving or moved to a steering position for manual driving. The HMI display interface is embedded in the deployable steer by wire arm, eliminating the need for touch interaction with the large display panel in the front of the cabin.
Early consumer studies using an EVI prototype show strong acceptance of the innovative concept. Test participants particularly valued the spacious interior and unique layout, despite no changes to the traditional SUV body size or shape.
„In addition to the improved user experience, the EVI also offers benefits for automakers. The integration of all important components in the Smart Cabin seat module simplifies and speeds up the assembly process while also reducing costs,” added Patrik Nebout.

The EVI also promotes sustainability by reducing vehicle weight by approximately 11 kg, resulting in greater energy efficiency, extended range, and lower CO2 emissions. The use of sustainable materials, such as Compression Hybrid Molding (CHyM) with natural fibers, demonstrates Yanfeng’s dedication to sustainability. The modular design also simplifies dismantling at the end of the vehicle’s life cycle and supports the circular economy.
